Chapter V, Protection

Chapter V

Protection

Fit, material and the fine print on the box.

Barrier products are the least glamorous chapter and possibly the most useful. Fit, material and correct use determine how well any condom or dam performs, and the differences between products are real.

In this chapter

Read before choosing

  • No barrier product eliminates all risk. Correct and consistent use according to the manufacturer’s instructions is what public-health bodies describe as effective use.
  • Check the expiration date and the condition of the packaging before every use, and store products away from heat, direct sunlight and sharp objects such as keys.
  • Latex allergies are real. Non-latex options exist, and a healthcare professional can advise if you are unsure about a reaction.
  • Questions about sexually transmitted infections, contraception or pregnancy belong with a clinician or a reputable health service, not a shopping guide.

Material and fit notes

Nominal width
Condom sizing is usually expressed as nominal width in millimetres, printed on the box. It is the most reliable way to compare fit between brands.
